After much, much, much procratination I finally broke down and ended up getting a little work done on the Unicorn this past weekend. The car has sat around since August or so of last year in stasis awaiting a fuel system install, a few sensors, a final sorting through, and some dyno tuning.
This weekend I decided to take a crack at the fuel sending unit problem that's been bugging me for a bit. AN fittings can be a bit of a pain, they're expensive, there are bazillions of them, and did I mention they're EXPENSIVE? Anyway. The fuel sending unit is a bit short, that doesn't leave much room for the -8an bulkhead fitting, a hose barb fitting, some hose, and the fuel pump. In fact, it won't work at all. I looked for the perfect fitting and came close, damn close, but I wanted -8an and 3/8" hose barb! The fitting I'm looking for however does not exist so I ended up buying an -8an bulkhead, slicing off the bottom, and then tapping it for the 3/8" hose barb. It went surprisingly well and it looks like it's going to work.
Here's a picture of the bulkhead fitting after I sliced the bottom off, tapped it, put the barb fitting in there, and test fit the hose.
Here's a shot of the bulkhead mocked up in the hanger assembly, yay could this be the answer?
So I then ended up putting a flat aluminum washer under the bulkhead nut on the bottom, and on the top side we have a viton o-ring, then another aluminum washer. This was another test fit but once it was all tightened down it actually looked like it could all work!
So, here it is, ready to drop in! Allededly this setup is good for around 600+whp on E85 and I intend to find out.
It was really nice out today so I also had some time to run to the pick-a-part yards and scored this bad boy off of a wrecked turbo brick! 14 bucks later and booyah! The pic doesn't really do her justice, it's a really nice oil cooler, maybe a setrab or mocal unit from the looks of it. Anyway, I'm not sure what I'll use it on (if anything) but ah well, too nice to leave behind!
So, that's it, more updates as they happen.
